Agriculture

Agriculture is the backbone of Floyd County’s economy.  A very high percentage of total county income is derived from agriculture and agri-business. Floyd County businesses pertaining to agriculture include:

  • Grain elevators

  • Feed stores

  • Veterinary clinic

  • Animal health supply

  • Livestock auction facility

  • implement dealers – John Deere and Case International

  • Fertilizer dealers

  • Fuel distributors

  • Irrigation supply & service companies

  • Water well service companies

  • Cotton gins

There are approximately 576,851 acres in the county where approximately 2,435 farmers and ranchers produce almost 20 different crops on 479,200 of those acres.  According to the Floyd County FSA office, the following crops were grown in Floyd County for the 2003 growing season:

  • 175,275 acres of cotton
  • 106,520 acres of wheat
  • 106,231 acres of sorghum
  • 4,110 acres of silage
  • 9,518 acres of hay
  • 1,178 acres of pumpkins

Other crops include corn, alfalfa, soybeans, peanuts, guar, millet, barley, cantaloupes, oats, seed okra, pecans, sunflowers.
