On Friday, February 19, 2010, representatives from the Plainview YMCA met with Floydada Mayor Bob Gilliland and Floydada Economic Development Director Justin Jaworski to discuss the possibility of opening a location in Floydada. According to Plainview YMCA Executive Director, Rob Wilkinson, several Floydada residents make use of the Plainview facility and as a result, generated interest in researching the feasibility of such an endeavor.

The YMCA has a rich history of community involvement and (learn more about their history) public programs for youth. Services that could be potentially provided include:

  1. Health and Wellness Center (membership based)
  2. Youth Sports (ages 3-12)
  3. Adult Sports (softball, basketball, etc.)
  4. Child care at schools
  5. Summer Day Camps
  6. Family Fitness Programs
  7. Teen Programs
  8. Backyard Swim Program
  9. Pre-school Activities

Benefits to the community of having a YMCA program in your community include:

  1. Instilling YMCA core values in children/adults
  2. Providing positive activities for the entire family at a reasonable price
  3. Making available quality program opportunities
  4. Keeping children off the streets/reduce crime
  5. Providing opportunities to improve health and over-all well being
  6. Providing a safe place for parents to leave their children while working
  7. Volunteering opportunities

In order to begin the process of researching what types of services that might be offered, the YMCA needs to hear from the community. Please take a moment to complete a brief online survey to help us indicate what, if anything, you might be interested in seeing in Floydada.
